AWARDS 

Since 2001 The Children's Book Project (CBP) has received the following awards:

◘ 10/02/2001 CBP received an award from National Kiswahili Council for promoting Kiswahili Language through publishing books in Kiswahili

◘ 17/08/2004 CBP received an award from the National Writers Association for facilitating the establishment of Zonal Writers Associations, and for the continued support

◘ 06/11/2005 CBP received a Zeze Award from Cultural Trust Fund for pioneering children's book writing and distribution of the books to schools

1. Book Production and Distribution

  • 237 titles of children books were produced and distributed to 3,642 primary schools in the country.
     
  • 35 titles of children books transcribed into Braille and distributed to 27 schools for visually impaired children
     
  • 4 Big Books authored by teachers and pupils were produced and distributed to 100 primary schools.
     
  • 5 Guidebooks on interactive and diagnostic methodologies have been produced
  • Increased access to a variety of relevant reading materials to schools and improved pupils abilities to read and write

  • Increased access to a variety of relevant reading materials to visually improved children.


  • Increased access to books and improved creativity of teachers and pupils to prepare their own books


  • Improved teaching practice, in schools

  • Improved education delivery

2. Reading Programme

  • 89 primary schools have established school libraries with cheap facilities for children to sit on while reading.
  • Increased access to a variety of relevant reading materials
     
  • Increased interest in reading among children
     
  • Increased capacity and skills for teachers to manage school libraries
     
  •  Improved oral communication and reading abilities to children
     
  • Increased community support for school libraries
     
  • Integrated reading activities into the daily lives of children and community members

3. Teacher training

  • 825 female and male in-service teachers from the Eastern zone were trained in Diagnostic and interactive
    methodologies of teaching
     
  • 825 female and male teachers have prepared teaching and reading materials in their schools
     
  • 89 primary schools have improved their academic performance as follows:

  • Improved skills of primary schools teachers to teach reading and other subjects.

4. Book sector training

  • 2, 625 writers were trained by CBP

  • 4 workshops were organized to publishers on publishing, book designing, management and finance skills.

  • 164 training sessions for illustrators and 7 courses were organized on basic skills on illustrating and designing for cover design and the use of colour separation process
  • Increased skills of authors.


  • Increased quality of book produced in terms of cover design, layout and physical appearance.


  • Increased quality of books in terms of illustrations and increased skills to artists.
